The Sex Discrimination Act 1975 is an act of the parliament of the united Kingdom which protects men and women from discrimination on the grounds of sex or marital status. Employment, training, education, harassment, the provision of goods and services, and the disposal of premises have been concerned by the act. There are four different ways of discriminating racially. These are; Indirect Discrimination; this can occur where there is a policy, practice or procedure which applies to all workers, in particular disadvantages people of a certain race .E.g. If GCSE maths was required when applying for ta job, people from other countries may not have GCSE qualifications so they would be discriminated against if equivalent qualifications were†¦show more content†¦This is defined as: †¢orientation towards people of the same sex (lesbians and gay men) †¢orientation towards people of the opposite sex (heterosexual) †¢orientation towards people of the same sex and the opposite sex (bisexual). It is also unlawful to discriminate against anyone and to treat them any less than others because of their perceived sexual orientation. E.g. not promoting someone as they are perceived as gay. Discriminate indirectly- to apply a practice which disadvantages people of a particular sexual orientation, unless it can be justified; E.g. a particular policy for maternity/ paternity leave does not apply to same sex couples. Subject someone to harassment- Harassing is unwanted conduct that violates a person’s dignity or creates an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment. Victimising someone as they have made or intend to make a complaint or allegation in relation to a complaint of discrimination with regards to sexual orientation. It is unlawful for an employer to dismiss an employee because they are pregnant or for reasons connected with the pregnancy/ maternity leave. It is unlawful for tan employer to deny the employee access to holiday, sickness, training pay or any other contractual benefit that all employees are entitled to.
